Asking for clairifcation, or bringing larger concepts to the discussion which may solve the questioner's overall problem should be encouraged.

The problem here is ::you:: sound like an ass in your reply. I would have been royally pissed.

To presume you've already solved the issue that led to your question in the best possible manner is to have an arrogance that will only irritate the people from whom you seek guidance

The only arrogance here I see is yours, thinking you can read the questioner's mind.
