an Input_Record_Separator s!^(?:$/= but "Programming Perl" did give much help?

That book has an Index on it's last pages.
There, p. 1034 shows $INPUT_RECORD_SEPARATOR ($/) is to bee looked up on p.666 (nice one).
More than one page is dedicated to it. It makes good reading.
