Is Usenet still worth the effort to read, at least in c.l.p.*?
Yes. It's my favourite Perl forum. Sure, it has much garbage posts, but if you count wrong answers to questions as "noise" as well, c.l.p.misc actually has a better S/R ratio than Perlmonks.
