eval BLOCK catches die. The following catches warnings and other uses of STDERR:

print STDERR ("\$stderr: $stderr");  # $stderr: foo

In earlier version of Perl, I think you can use IO::Scalar to do:
tie *STDERR, 'IO::Scalar', \$stderr;
