I'm faced with the oft-repeated question of how to match a numeric range of values via a regular expression. All of the answers I've found so far, are of the form
(2[0-4]\d|25[0-5]|[01]?\d?\d)
for the typical 0-255 range. None of the answers I've found have attempted to address the question by using the code execution feature of regex. The problem I can't solve is how to report the result of the match!
The i/o is a little crude on this one-liner, but it shows the idea...
perl -n -e "print (( $x = $_ =~ m@^(\d+)(?{if ($^N < 255 && $^N > 233)
+ {print 'true '}})$@ ) . ' ' )"
While the "true" output appears appropriately based on the range given, the regular expression always matches (shown by the 1 in the output).
Is there a way to get the regex to fail in the cases where true is not printed?
