As for when it started, try asking Super Search for the oldest nodes.
And yes, like others say, paco has sparked this site: he's asked a perl question on an empty internet site and never came back but the question was so good the site founders has built a whole perl support site around it. This is evidenced by that vroom and nate have a higher homenode id (and later joining date) than paco.
