Excellent idea. Never thought of that. I actually did download the source code, and found the small section of code which needs to be commented out to fix this issue. Now I just need to figure my way through the makefiles and install scripts, and convince our sys-admin to use a hacked version of CVS, which is probably just slightly less work than trying to implement the workarounds above.
