The posted code was just a simplified version of the actual code. I'm leveraging an existing MAP function to give me the maximum value, that's when all the strangeness started.

It doesn't matter if you use FOR, FOREACH, MAP, the interpreter decides what to use anyway. It's not like the old days when this was a speed critical choice.

I detest people who say "read the manual". I did read the manual. It didn't help otherwise I would NOT BE HERE. The manual also does NOT warn that it will place an empty set into $_ completely NUKING anything there if an expression is false. That's not exactly obvious, but is more of a side effect in my opinion. The manual could be more specific in the area.
