Bouncing around how to do this I eventually decided that the named pipe should be replaced with a TCP server bound to localhost so you can easily have multiple "workers" processing the requests. A good TCP protocol to use for this is HTTP. So you might just want to use mod_perl and just make sure it is configured to only accept requests from localhost.
