I want to make sure I'm very clear on one thing: The "letters in common" metric has absolutely nothing to do with position, right?

    Not for the purposes of my challenge. I haven't seen any official rule book on mystery word puzzles. Given the answer to the example puzzle - you are safe in assuming 'letters in common' has no relationship to position.
