    If you have such strange restrictions on your code, then you need to explain to us why those restrictions are in place.

    If you don't explain the need for such restrictions, then we'll start thinking that you're asking us to help you with your homework - and we don't really like helping people with homework.

    This doesn't make much sense: yes, it's silly! Perhaps you should explain what it is that bothers you about doing a substitution. And I can't see why you're so keen on $1 instead. Granted these variables are often useful, but I for one prefer to use the return value of m// whenever possible.
