Anonymous Monker !

Hi All, Well I am writing this with a bit of fear !

Last time i did write an RFC for www.perlmonks.org and it got downrated by everyone to reach the worst node of the day.

Anyhow I would just like to know whether we need to continue addresing the anonymous user of this monastery as "Anonymous-Monk" .. while people in this monastery take lot of points/time to reach the monk level.

I will also tell you the reason why I did write this -

Since i respect this monastery very much I am very keen to know whether the "Monk" sticking to the Anonymous user is a right attribute given to the anonymous user.

very few people in Anonymous category put questions or reply as real monks of this group.

Please give a thought about this Mr Vroom and other fellow monks { of course without downrating this node ;-) }

Castaway, Bart , Corion and many more - who have been correcting me at times , I would like a reply from you too.

Its sad that people are replying to me as if I want to acclaimed as a monk , infact I was downvoted once for telling why am I an Acolyte when i am not worth it.

Huh , this would be my last comment on something on the site and I will concentrate on coding perl rather than talking things on this monastery.

Still I am happy to see the unity in you ( on commenting against me :-D )

I'm a monk, you're a monk. Monk is more than the title in our hierarchy, it is the name of a - and of our - profession in the monastery. Imagine you were hired as a "programmer" and given the tile of an "aspirant programmer" or whatever, next might be "assistent programmer" eventually reaching "junior programmer" and eventually "programmer" before being a "senior ..." - get the idea? All the time you have been a programmer. Maybe even with seniority which the hierarchy failed to honour you with. Distinguish between an honorific title in a hierarchy (that doesn't really matter) and the name of the profession. We're all monks in this monastery. Cheers, Sören	[reply]

I don't see any particular reason to rename the Anonymous Monk account at all. Many of them do in fact ask good questions, and write good answers. Whether we are monks with names, or anonymous ones, we are all a part of this community. Anonymous Monks are just community members who have not yet created an account, or cannot login for some reason, They are just as deserving of the title "Monk" as the rest of us. C.	[reply]

very few people in Anonymous category put questions or reply as real monks of this group. Oh, make no mistake about it... Anonymous Monk is often enough an Anonymous Saint. As far as addressing him goes, AM and Anonymonk work for short, but the Anonymous Monk is a fixture here and I don't think you'll find much support in your proposal. -sauoq "My two cents aren't worth a dime.";	[reply]

Mysterious Voice sounds really cool. But I highly doubt there is a chance to get away from Anonymous Monk. Maybe we could make it a user option? holli, /regexed monk/	[reply] [d/l]

There may be reasons why someone comments anonymously. They may be afraid of getting downvoted. They may feel secure enough about XP that they don't care if they miss a few points. They may not have time to sign in, or they may have simply been browsing around and found a question they could answer. Certainly there have been many thoughtful questions and helpful answers posted by Anonymous Monk. It doesn't necessarily indicate any disrespect for the Monastery or for the monks. As others have said, XP is just a number. Getting upvoted doesn't make you a better person or a better programmer; downvotes don't make you worse. You could focus on Perl coding, but I would hope you won't avoid other comments, just because people might downvote you. And if you're really worried about it, just don't sign in - make your comment as Anonymous Monk.	[reply]

Joking apart (yes, sadly that was supposed to be a joke) it would seem to be a trend that the people who complain about being down voted get down voted. On this topic you may wish to read The Role of XP in PerlMonks if you have not already done so. On the topic of renaming "Anonymous Monk" why bother? A rose by any other name and so on....
