Well actually we have a medium 2000 spring matress on a fixed devan. Springs are in 2 layers so the matress is nice and thick. No way even the most royal of princesses could pee through it (or something - Terry Pratchett).

I'd prefer a firm matress on a sprung devan, the wife a soft matress on fixed so this is a compromise.
