so are you saying that "foo", once a text string stored in $name, is now a variable in its own right with the value 1 stored in it? I think im still confused (oh and by the way, I read perlref and didnt get that either)

No "foo" isn't changed, $foo is. ${"foo"} is a symbolic reference to $foo. "What should it profit a man, if he should win a flame war, yet lose his cool?"	[reply]

So the value stored in $name ("foo") is unaltered, but we have created a new variable named $foo with a value of 1? Please dont track me down and kill me!!!! (I feel like im going around in circles)	[reply]

Exactly :-) Note that we don't create $foo by assigning to $name, but by assignment to $$name (double $$s), you can also create @foo by assigning to @$name etc etc. "What should it profit a man, if he should win a flame war, yet lose his cool?"
