I don't believe that Archive::Tar supports unpacking of files which have been gzip'd. Take a look at unpacking .gz from perl for some hints on how to achieve this. Super search is your friend.

    Archive::Tar supports gzip'ed files iff the IO::Zlib module is installed - or so its' POD claims and I've no reason to question it:-)

    At last, a user level that best describes my experience :-))
