A well designed and well written D(R)DBMS should hide the "ugliness" of being disributed for the simple user. There is no real reason why Perl could not access this with the usual DBI / DBD::* combo.DBD::Teradata is a good example I think. Update: added an example of a driver for a DRDBMS.
