@tmp is empty. You iterate over all of its indexes, of which there are none. Nothing happens.

Maybe you should have while (my $line = <$IFH>) { ... } as your outer loop?

    okay ill work on that, but where would i put  $j<=$#tmp what should i do with it?

      Since you use $nt[$j] inside your loop, might it not be more sensible to loop over @nt instead of @tmp?

        yea ur right, i originally had it like that, but im pretty new to perl, and this way makes more sense to me at the moment,
