    If you mean the  {1,2} 'counted' quantifier, see Quantifiers in perlre.

    Update: Also: Did you really mean to use the bitwise or operator  | in the if statement preceding the if statement in question?
        if ($input =~ m/.../ | $input =~ m/.../) { ... }
