Sad news..

In this post Mark Keating announces the closing down of the Enlightened Perl Organisation.

Among other things of them I see strawberryperl

Sad indeed. If Mark thinks the race is run then there isn't much more to be done. I suppose having the initiatives which the EPO was previously funding now stand on their own has to be considered a good thing.

I have been supporting CPAN Testers via the EPO since the appeal and hope that this doesn't bode ill for their infrastructure, especially given the recent problems.

Sometimes it's just the logistics to organize fundings and not the money itself which is missing.

I'm just coming back from this year's GPW in Frankfurt and asked visitors from London about this year's schedule of LPW, and they told me that chances are slim for an in-person conference this year.

Mainly because nobody is there to contact possible sponsors and/or track down missing resources from previous online donations.

Given the comparatively huge base of Perl hackers in London that's very surprising.

OTOH EPO might have covered that field too good in the past, to cultivate successors?

We are thinking of doing something around LPW, we just don't know what yet. It might be later this year or early next year.

This has nothing to do with the complexities around finances or sponsorship, which we have covered, it's more about how we get back into it in this not-quite-post COVID environment.

Question: Is "The Perl Foundation" present in Europe° ?

That is with bank accounts and status as non-profit organization?

      °) plus renegade Islands ;-)

On the basis of this I would say probably not, but it's not easy to prove a negative.

Which should not to be confused with the European Union Outermost Regions. If one of the reason TPF is not available in the EU is along the lines "we only deal with the American continent", the EU can certainly help out in this case: French Guiana in South America is part of France, therefore part of the EU, therefore part of the European banking system. Couldn't we just, you know invite those board members to a rocket launch and have them sign up for a bank account while they're on (technically) european soil?

Technically, there are also the "Overseas countries and territories", so if TPF prefers a tax heaven, i think we are able to provide a few of those to pick and choose.
