For the lurkers: If you like the Monastery and are recommending a book in your node, you may wish to provide a FatBrain link so that Vroom gets a small kickback if someone buys a book through that link. To do this:

  1. Locate the book's ISBN number, according to FatBrain. (Use their Search feature to find the most recent edition, as appropriate.)
  2. In your node type [ isbn:// ### | Link title ], where ### is the ISBN number.
  3. Test your link while Previewing your node. (I usually open it in a new window.)
  4. Submit. :)

This also works in the Chatterbox.

How do I form a URL if I'm refering to a book from some place other than a PM node, and want to support PM?

    —John

Construct the URL as if it were provided by The Monastery. For example, suppose you wish to refer to Llama3 from another web site, define your A HREF as follows:

      Here's an excellent book for <a href="http://www1.fatbrain.com/asp/BookInfo/BookInfo.asp?theisbn=0596001320&from=MDZ411">Learning Perl.</a>

The &from=MDZ411 parameter is what tells FatBrain that The Monastery is the referring associate.

      --f

P.S. Random HTML trivia regarding your .sig: Netscape 4x doesn't understand the &mdash; entity; however it does support the character code version, e.g. &#8212;. If you're interested in the support found in older browsers for other entities, this seems to be a reasonably complete reference. It is a little out of date, though.

        > The &from=MDZ411 parameter is what tells FatBrain that The Monastery is the referring associate.

Thanks. I did a isbn: link in the CB to generate the URL I needed. But knowing the rule makes it easier next time!

Re netscape 4: The complete list of entities has been published for years. How hard can it be? Shouldn't that be a matter of updating a simple file? I seem to remember an old Netscape that didn't like “quotes” either, but I thought that was History.

Hmm, why not have the Monistary convert entitiy names to numeric form?
