RatArsed, awhile ago, I probably would have agreed with you. However, at this point I disagree. Here is my reasoning:
- The ability to change one's main node can be too easily abused. The temptation is just to great for abuse.
- While writing a node, you have the ability to read, and edit and preview to your heart's content... THEN you submit. Just take your time in the creation of a node... it's not a race.
- The ability to 'nuke' your own node could also be abused... and again that temptation could be great. What happens when you have a node going 'downhill' and you want to reap it to avoid the 'ack...' What did you learn by that? What would others learn from that? The answer is that we wouldn't learn, and neither would you.
- Sometimes having a negative rep on node makes one humble, and drives people to make a decision. Either they get over it, move on, and get better thus helping the community, or they get mad and leave. I made that choice a long time ago, that's why I'm still here. I think you have as well.
I know that I've made my share of mistakes here, and others will as well. It's normal to avoid being embarassed, but in this case I think that this could be helpful, and a growing experience. Even though I don't agree with you, don't think that this is a personal attack. Keep posting and participating.

No, I don't think so.
This can be manipulative, lots of people post a bad answer, a faulty solution, and get some downvoting, they can use that to reap the node and avoid XP loss...
If you post something worthy of being downvoted, an error answer, you should get downvoted for that. Anyway high level monks can consider the node, and other high leveled monks will see about it, and the node would be treated based on the opinion of multiple monks, but being able to quickly reape one's node is a bad idea. ( at least I think so )

You can edit your root nodes in meditations. You can also change or even remove all the content from RE: nodes. If a node has no content it will generally get reaped. Editing top level nodes should not be possible as if you start a discussion you have started one. The replies relate to this so would lose their meaning if the top level node changes or dematerialises. Also when nodes get frontpaged it would look a little silly if they were blank. (You can't frontpage meditations for this reason).
The editors can fix typos, and other errors in top level nodes. All up I think this works well.

Some good points (above) made on user freedom and abusability (is that a word?). Personally I don't have any problem with how the system works now. But I know that if I were to double post, I would cringe and desperately wish for a delete button.
Perhaps all posts could go into 'holding' or 'upcoming new nodes' or some such place. They could sit there for 60 seconds, during which they cannot be voted on and may be deleted by the original poster (and saints?).
Again, personally, I preview most of my messages at least 5 times before posting them. Especially if they have code in them.
