http://modulecounts.com/ points out some obvious flaws in the material you cite -- boring

    from http://cpan.org

The Python Package Index is a repository of software for the Python programming language. There are currently 30088 packages here.

      from ...

The cited source denies the existence of these CPAN-like things

And you're just quoting the same numbers they quoted, where is the lie?

Seems like I was wrong! Mea culpa! :(

I got confused by ambiguous definitions of the term "package" in Python and when browsing thru Gems I had the impression to see only bare modules.

Maybe it's just me or a matter of practice but neither PyPi nor Gems seem to have the usability of CPAN.

        Striked the lie.

        update

anyway digging deeper into the differences of CPAN, PyPi and Gems reveals a huge quality advantage.

just read some of the hits for CPAN vs PyPi
