[OT] most popular irc client in monks

xiaoyafeng has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi monks,

Irc is the most useful tool to find quick answer about perl questions. I use to xchat (in windows) for this purpose. but recently, I intend to switch my main platform of perl to debian. any recommends? Below are some requirements:

based on terminal(I work in tmux/terminator)
written in perl or can add plugins in perl
multi windows or tabs

Any options? Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: thanks erix!, looks irssi is an wonderful irc client and meets all of my requirements! I can't wait to try! thanks again.

The second point ("can add plugins in perl") brings Pidgin to mind, but of course that's a GTK+ app not console-based.	[reply]

Personally I open emacs and type "Meta+X irc", but you can use alice that can be configured using Perl hashes. In bash: `# apt-get install alice $ man alice $ less ~/.alice/config` [download] To run the program you type alice in bash and then paste the direction provided in your favourite net browser you can also try the package ekg2-scripting-perl or do it yourself with the modules libanyevent-irc-perl or libnet-irc-perl	[reply] [d/l]

Doesn't meet all of your requirements, but if you are an emacs user, there are quite a few IRC clients there. --MidLifeXis	[reply]

If you were using xchat, your best bet is to use hexchat. xchat stopped active maint in 2010. By that time the people that maintained the Windows version forked of to hexchat, which is OpenSource (no payments needed for the Windows build) and very actively maintained. I use hexchat with the #cbstream channel on freenode to follow PerlMonks. Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn	[reply]

Rightfully so, except HEXCHAT has stupid defaults. Enabled /amsg. When asked to parse quiet list in a channel, they /removed/ the key words, making the output for ban and quiet entry identical. I would envision such idiotic development model, even if they manage to convince that xchat is unmaintained, to not end successfully. You can see XCHAT commits at sourceforge. It is also stupid and you have to wait a while for them to load. Last commit was in July 2013. LifeIsPain is still active at XCHAT's channel.
