Syrkres has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I recently started playing trade wars (a BBS style game) and was wondering if anyone has ever written a Perl interface to the game? I am asking because I would like to write a customizable interface to the game in Perl, which runs over telnet.

Also does anyone else play the game?

I have not written a Perl interface to TradeWars, but I have written a helper script that reads in a list of sectors and finds trading pairs, one way warps, sector bubbles, and so on.

I also wrote a little script that calculates how much Fuel Ore is on a planet based on the damage done by two consecutive qcannon blasts.

I'd like to see that helper script, if you would permit.

I have played the game, bit it was a while ago.... I'd be willing to help, if you would like it.

Ahhh...nostalgia. I used to run a board with multiple TW games going. The hardcore players wanted Tourney mode, the purists wanted the original 1.0x versions with the bugs to cheat (mmm...loading up a planet with shields...). My friends and I were going to write a port to C/unix, but Martech didn't give us their blessing. When they sold to (forget his name now - but I submitted the /. post last year about it - the guy's name was John), we again asked him and he said he had his own plans for the game. I started to do a private re-write, and got the sector plotting stuff working (which was a tough algorithm for me at the time, but it's so darned cool!) but it died. Anyways, I've got some insight into the game. It's a classic, that's for sure.
