Double-duty on that last parenthesis. It's both a closing parenthesis and the mouth of the smiley. Are you allowed to do that?

      FWIW, i first wondered this in 2002, with a post including, "I can remember having this debate back on BBSs." I think it's about time the knowledgeable monks of our monastery weighed in on the matter. :)

      What mods do you suggest?

        possible additions:

        • replace outer parens with -- .
        • use code tags around the smiley.
        • use angle brackets (square brackets, etc) instead of parens.
        • use C-style commenting to set the smiley off from the closing paren.
        • make the smiley a dunce: (:> .
        • I disapprove of emoticons.
