I recently got promoted to level 10 "Hermit," and I saw that there is more information about this level. So, I clicked on the "Hermitage" link, and to my surprise, the page is empty. Well, I made a note of that, and Ken informed me that it's not empty. It says, "Info for Hermits (and above) only." Okay, so is this a joke? I see the words "Info for Hermits (and above) only" and it's followed by nothing but blank space all the way to the bottom of the page. Then at the very bottom it says, "PerlMonks lovingly hand-crafted by Tim Vroom..." So, my question is is there something on this page that should be visible to me? because I can't see it.

    Hi

    I did some digging.

    From what I can see, it seems the The Hermitage page is obsolete by now and can be removed again.

    In 2018 one of the gods was experimenting with a special secret° feature available only for hermits and above.

    He decided to deactivate it again and deleted the usage information there.

    Anyway even if he wants to reactivate it, at least the link-path

    should be disabled now.

    On a side note:

    As a Hermit you should be capable to properly link and format your posts. I had to follow Ken's replies twice to have a slight idea what you were talking about.

      Nah. It's not really a problem to have a nearly empty document as a placeholder. It would be more work than it's worth to remove it, especially given that we might have something special to show to Hermits in the future, at which point we'll need that page again.

      I reckon we are the only monastery ever to have a dungeon staffed with 16,000 zombies.

      Thank you. That helps a lot! I am learning slowly, but I am learning! I usually just come here and click on the "Recent Threads" link at the top. I see there's tons of stuff on this site, but I haven't had the time yet to look at everything. To me, this whole site seems like a giant maze. I'm still figuring things out. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to post a note here in the PerlMonks Discussion page. I usually come here to ask questions about perl or to see if I can answer anybody else's questions. I use Perl under Windows, so sometimes I can give my two cents about what is particular about Windows. I also bought an old apple laptop just to run perl scripts to see how my scripts behave in a MacOS environment. Since I have been starting to learn Perl in 2016, I have also written a lot of code. While others might be drinking beer or going to parties or watching sports, I am just here writing Perl scripts for fun. It's relaxing to me. I like to solve puzzles, and computer programming is full of puzzles.

      Okay. So the Hermitage page is not some mistake. It's empty on purpose. I just wanted to know that. Since I use a browser that is an offshoot of PaleMoon, sometimes there is content that does not show up on my computer. And I was wondering if there is something there that only I cannot see on my computer or if others can't see it either. It's blank on purpose. Thanks for clearing that up!

      A few more details I have discovered: Emails and phone numbers are not blocked on PerlMonks unlike on Craigslist where if you insert a phone number or email, the script automatically recognizes it and hides it when the post is published. On Facebook or Twitter, if you mention a web address, it automatically becomes a clickable link and it loads a preview. PerlMonks does not do that. In Microsoft Word, when you type a date, it becomes a special object. PerlMonks doesn't behave that way.

        I guess you're aware that <code>...</code> and <c>...</c> are preferred. These have the benefits of: not requiring entities (e.g. you don't need to change & to &amp;, and so on); wrapping long lines; and, in block form, supplying a [download] link to the original text. As you saw with your "Hebrew letters", entities may be rendered (e.g. ם becomes &#1501;). I tend to use <code> for blocks and <c> for inline text; however, they are interchangeable.

        You get none of those benefits with <pre>...</pre>: you'll need to change special characters to entities manually (e.g. > to &gt;); you should also aim to keep lines short to avoid messing up the overall page view. What <pre> is particularly useful for is rendering characters outside the 7-bit ASCII range; <code> will render some of those (e.g. é to é and © to ©) but not others (e.g. ē to &#275; and ☺ to &#9786;) — I'm never going to remember the full list of which render as characters or entities, so I just take the pragmatic approach as use <pre> for all characters outside the 7-bit ASCII range. For inline work, I find <tt>...</tt> useful.

        Yes, there's a lot of information and it can be daunting. Here's three nodes that I do recommend you at least know about and bookmark for future reference: "Writeup Formatting Tips", "Markup in the Monastery" and "Perl Monks Approved HTML tags". Also note that PerlMonks' HTML is not HTML5: believing they're the same is a common mistake many people make.
