Currently you can clear your "newest nodes" list up to the current time. However, it might be useful if you could remove specific nodes that you no longer want to show up. The "Newest Nodes" node is where I usually go so it would be nice for it to be more configurable.

I prefer RAT view and the color scheme plus my votes and timestamps give me a good indication what I already saw.

(Obviously you've already read where you voted. Well at least you should have ;)

If that's not enough, I'm pretty sure you can adjust your CSS settings to mark or hide already voted posts.¹

    Edit

I've also a Nodelet hack in place which pre folds all threads, hence I can ignore them easily by title, even if they have a lot of traffic.

Like Lanx I prefer Recently Active Threads as my stepping off point. I open threads I'm interested in in a new browser tab then click the "I've checked all these" button. Since RAT only shows threads with new stuff that provides a pretty good initial filter.

Optimising for fewest key strokes only makes sense transmitting to Pluto or beyond
And the four view options for threads make it even better customizable

Current View Mode is (Root and Node), switch to (Minimal Nodes), (Node Ancestors) or (Full Thread)

Thanks for the comments. I agree that "Recent Threads" has some nice info and configurability, but for just checking if there is a new node I think I still prefer "Newest Nodes". I don't think my original suggestion is that important and I like the simplicity of "Newest Nodes" as is.

    For completeness ...

This is not what you want, but RAT has also a "Filtered Nodes" mode to "block" selected posts from appearing.

But this will also block replies!

I never used this because thread drift is often meaningful.
