Your original answer sums up perfectly why I am mystified when someone calls me a pessimist. I would never, on my worst, lowest day tell someone, not even someone I hated: Do not "aim high." Encouraging mediocrity may be old hat but you ought to take a long drive to the mountains or something to reflect on what it says about the ones who do it.
