It looks like I misunderstood your question about the line endings. The file is provided by MediCal and is in the "ANSI ASC X12" format which they also referred to as an "ANSI 835s" file. According to Notepadd++ the end of line characters are CR LF. I hope that helps.	[reply]

Editors often mess with line endings, and are not to be trusted. Does Windows have a raw dump program (like Linux "od") that can show real file contents?	[reply]

I looked up a spec for 835 and there is no CAS* There are CAS01 through CAS19 Was your test case real? Are there really *'s in the file?	[reply]

Yes the test case was real. It was as accurate as I could quickly make it. I could provide actual content but I would have to be careful to remove patient data. As I had mentioned in my initial post the one-line code I provided did work as it successfully matched the "*" characters. You gave me some good suggestions and pointers, and I am trying a few things. I should get back to you all by Monday at the latest. I also think I found a good app to get a raw dump of the file contents.	[reply]
