It doesn't seem to be that I'm sending them too quickly, because I can even get that error when I send 1 email after 10 mins of sending nothing. But it may be that my ISP's mail server is too busy with requests from other customers. | [reply] |

Can you get the same error when you send email using a "normal" email client ?
If so, then you have good grounds for asking your ISP to take action to eliminate this problem.
If not, then you still face the possibility that this problem is specific to your use of MIME::Lite.

Thanks for your comment, Rob.
Yes, I had considered trying Outlook 2007 to test that, but just hadn't done it, but I've done it now in response to your suggestion, and after sending about 10 messages I noticed that maybe half of them took 30-60 secs to send (at which point they moved to the Sent Items folder), and the others took about a sec or 2. But I'm not sure that means MIME::Lite is the cause (and I know you're not claiming it necessarily means that), because it could be that Outlook notices the problem, then pauses and retries (1 or more times) until it either works or fails too many times, while MIME::Lite just fails as soon as it sees the first error. But I'm just guessing here and I might try a different Perl mail module sometime.
For the reasons I've mentioned above about Vodafone NZ, I doubt they'll be willing to even investigate this issue, and I'm not worried because I can tollerate the failures for this short term requirement. Just wondered if there was an easy fix.

Indeed, this appears to be a server-side error that you will now have to find an agreeable way to work around.
