in reply to Re: what is "milliBarr"?
in thread what is "milliBarr"?

The allusion to the unit of pressure is obvious.

What aspect of Graham's code the milliBarr (with two Rs) is meant to refer to is not.

The only possible illumination of that point I can find in your response is if you mean to say that Graham's Perl code is considered to be extremely Pascal-like, but it's not clear whether that is your actual intent, or if you're just attempting to educate the OP on the meaning of millibar (with one R).

    I can't be sure if "Bar" is common in every country. In a world full of Fahrenheit, Feet and Stones ..

    > to be extremely Pascal-like,

    No. For me it's an obvious fun labeling of a coding style.

    Similar to "Kafkaesque" or "Marx Brotherish".

    What else needs to be known?

    Do you think PM should be used to publicly criticize a CPAN author with working modules?

      "...Similar to "Kafkaesque" or "Marx Brotherish..."

      Lanxism?

      «The Crux of the Biscuit is the Apostrophe»

      perl -MCrypt::CBC -E 'say Crypt::CBC->new(-key=>'kgb',-cipher=>"Blowfish")->decrypt_hex($ENV{KARL});'Help

        I have the dubious honor to have someone create me a perl6 module to allow my specific coding style with Slang::Tuxic, without which I would never have started perl6 programming. He named the slang after me :)

        The superfluous "r" and "th" instead of "d" in Max Brod's name is definitely Lanxism.

        ($q=q:Sq=~/;[c](.)(.)/;chr(-||-|5+lengthSq)`"S|oS2"`map{chr |+ord }map{substrSq`S_+|`|}3E|-|`7**2-3:)=~y+S|`+$1,++print+eval$q,q,a,
      What else needs to be known?
      There's still the open question of what makes the coding style distinctive, so that one might know when it's appropriate to apply the label to code not written by Graham himself and/or how to identify code which the label doesn't apply to, even though it was written by Graham.

      Where do you see any criticism of, well, anyone in the opening post of this thread? All I see there is "Hey, guys, I ran across a brief reference to an obscure inside joke. Can someone explain it?"

        Did you read the linked blog post?

        Just to cite two parts (I underlined criticism):

        • maintenance has become a burden. Most of the site is running 2005 era Perl code .
        • I patched it a number of times, but there was one problem I couldn't quite put my finger on so, I asked JHI, then the P5 Pumpking, to have a look and even he was bewildered. I wonder if his #WTF comment is still in there

        Update

        But what I'd like to emphasize, is:

        • Graham won a White Camel award in 2002.
        • We would like to thank all who have assisted with this project. An extra special thanks to Graham for his hard work and unwavering support of search.cpan.org for all these years.

    What I (obviously) meant was why exactly was so out-of-the-ordinary about Graham's style that it deserved it's own expression.

    I probably should have been more explicit but I did not expect some clowns to get all excited when they recognize a simple pun.
