Installing Perl Modules

WintersMystic has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

i cannot, for some reason, configure my PC to run perl. ive downloaded the components needed, but no go. so i gave up on that. but can someone tell me how to use a module with a webhost? my host has installed modules but i need to use some modules they do not have at times. so how can i use a module they dont have without requesting them to install it.

They will install if they feel it will be used widely by their other clients.

Well, I think you might have given up too soon on getting Perl to go on your PC (it really can't be that hard, can it?). But at any rate... if the module in question is pure perl code, then you could just pull out the stuff that you want and paste it into your own code. If you do this, be sure to document in your script where you got this code!. If it's a compiled module, I think you're out of luck unless you can convince your ISP to install it. Just out of curiosity, what kinda hardware and OS are you using that you couldn't run perl? ~CS	[reply]

I highly recommend ActivePerl for those that have difficulty maintaining Unix-ish Perl installations. This installs like any other Windows application and does not require a lot of help. http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/	[reply]

I agree with the monks who encourage you not to give up installing locally. If you haven't got one already, you may want to get a copy of Apache, as it sounds like you are running CGI scripts, and these won't work locally if you don't run them via `localhost` on a local web server. Installing Apache on Win98 is harder than installing ActiveState perl, but not much harder, and I'm all thumbs when it comes to this kind of thing. Update: Zecho informs me that since I did this (a year or so back) it's actually got much easier to install Apache on Win32 - easier than installing Internet Explorer... so now there's no excuse :) § George Sherston	[reply] [d/l]
