I don't know about the rest of you, but if you're like me you browse Perlmonks off and on during the day at work and often end up with a few votes left over at closing time. What to do with them? The temptation is to just ++ everything on the front page and be done with it, but that doesn't seem very monkish to me. Instead, I like to pick a random person from the Other Users or Chatterbox boxes, run down the list of their posts on their home node, and vote up the ones I like. I use up all my votes in a contructive manner, donate a few experience points to someone who might not otherwise get them, and maybe make someone's day a bit brighter. :)

Or just go to Worst Nodes and vote up any which, while not gaining your enthusiastic acclaim, certainly don't warrant being sub-zero (especially those from new members).

I often do the same thing you do, except less randomly. The Chatterbox is sorted by XP, so I'll start at the bottom and look to see whether someone new has posting anything worthy of an encouraging vote. This compenstates for the lazy habit I've developed of skimming Newest Nodes looking mostly at responses from people I know of.

Along with the other suggestions already mentioned, I tend to pay special attention to the sections that deal primarily with code (Code Catacombs, Cool Uses for Perl, Snippets, and Craft) I think the average rep in these sections is far below their relative value to the perlmonks community.

I definately agree with you on this, many of these nodes do not get their due credit. I focus my votes almost exclusively in these sections.

As for having too many votes, I currently have 16 and haven't yet run into a situation where I couldn't find enough worthy nodes to ++ :)

I agree with Petral. While I don't always do it, I try to look there when I get a chance.

I personally don't think that just because you have vote's you have to use them.. Heck, I usually don't use a 1/4 of them. I get 30 a day right now. I'm currently at 27. I *might* use 2-3 more before the day is over.

Instead of tring to use all your votes, maybe you should focus more on making sure the node is worthy of it.

    Just my opinion,
    Rich

    I prefer to
  • use Random Nodes
  • let them expire. That way I don't contribute to the inflation of $NORM

I figure I'm really too new to be able to accurately judge a lot of things about code. I check in Seekers. It seems tolerant of moderately stupid questions (like mine) as long as they're well-worded. If I find something in Seekers that makes me think and is in decent English, I'll ++ it.

Then I go to Discussion...hey, there's a use for one of my last votes: ++ this node. :)

Then, usually, Meditations. If I have anything after that (unlikely, I only have 12 votes right now) I look for something I understand in Cool Uses. After that, I go browsing for good nodes linked from home nodes.

I realize this is a lot of thinking for only 12 votes. I also prefer casting this many votes about something I care about, as opposed to casting about this many votes at my town's general elections. (Do I really want to make a decision about waste water that an honest-to-God expert should probably be making? Nope.)

Hey, now that I think of it...is there a 'percentage of votes used' stat? If not, why not?

    You are what you think.

i tend to follow blakem's route when i have some time and votes to spend. if you look around in those realms you'll find some very nice contributions that somehow have largely evaded the attention of the larger community, and are worthy of votes.
