I started to write some small tutorials in german for our local perlmongers group.
They will include topics like references, SQL, DBI, debugging, regexes and so on.
I will deliver talks on the topics and thought it was good to have some reading material for the audience.

Do you think it will be appropriate to include them in the tutorial section?

    I've asked the same question about a book review in french, and received a warm support, so I did it...

    I see no reason why you shouldn't do it too.

    For my part, I'd just ask for an additional english version of the tutorials
    for the people who don't speak german (like me ;-)...

    I've got sympathy with both viewpoints, but my £/50 is post it. After all, disk space may not be free, but it's pretty cheap, and whilst it's true that everyone here speaks English, asking and answering a question in a foreign language is one thing, but taking in new information, where you have less background and fewer clues, is much more difficult. So I think it wd be valuable. My only suggestion is that you put "(Auf Deutsch / In German)" or something like that in the title to save monoglot anglophones (and let's face it, most of us are) from disappointment. Respect to you for taking the trouble, any how.

    I think there are enough German monks here to appreciate German speaking tutorials. But I can see stefan_k's point about confusing things. So I think maybe it would be an idea to create a sub-group under Tutorials for the respective language, i.e. German in thise case. And, as George_Sherston suggests, put "In Deutsch / German" or something like that into the title. This would not only save non-German speakers (or would that be readers?) from a disappointment, but also help in Super Search.

    Why shouldn't we put up a section with foreign language tutorials here at PerlMonks? I think this community is global enough that many people would appreciate, and also many could actually contribute, by writing or translating (in the copious amount of spare time we all have... (: ). But then, is this the place where you would look for non-English tutorials? I don't know. Maybe you should indeed think about getting your own website for that.

    You can read (lang: en) Monks qui parlent des langages autres que l'anglais for my thoughts on this subject. I strongly urge you to post those tuturials. Perlmonks has predominantly become an English-only resource, but Perl is not an English-only programming language. I feel that posting a translation in English and cross-linking the two copies would be a nice concession to those who oppose the idea. I also recommend a title convention to identify the language:

        (lang: de) Ich bin ein Berliner :)

    Such a convention would make it easy to search for posts in one's native language and make it easier for those who don't speak English to filter them out.

    Well,
    first of all loads of good thoughts to you that you're taking the road of writing docs. You'll earn lots of karma points with that :)

    As for posting the tutorials here I'd say that's not a good idea. We'd soon end up with tutorials in many different languages and that would confuse things. You'd need a differentiation quite early in your structure, probably you should register perlmonks.de (if it's still available). I have done something quite related by providing the german introduction to XEmacs and I keep it at my own private page. I think a mixture of languages at a late point in the structure (oh my, this sounds so stupid - I mean at the level of "tutorial" or "meditation" and the like) just confuses things.

    Otherwise I am looking forward to reading your docs :)

    Please do. Not just for the native German speakers, but for people who learned it as a second (or third) language. I'd very much like reading something that interests me and at the same time helps me brush up my German :)

    I think anything relevant to the Perl community should be posted, regardless of language. True, I would be disppointed if there was no English equivalent available, but then sometimes I don't understand the ones written in English either.

    I don't think the "wait around for a new section" argument holds water. Half of what's currently on PM probably wouldn't be here if that were the case. Post it where it seems reasonable and if it needs to be reorganized later, so be it. In the mean time let those that can learn from and enjoy it do so.
