Translates an English string into Al Bhed, a language from Final Fantasy X. I don't know if anyone would consider this a real language (or else I'd write Lingua:AlBhed :), cause it's really only a basic cipher. This doesn't take into account proper nouns that shouldn't be translated, like "magic" or "aeons", but it'll get you started.
$_ = "Let's start a Perl Monks blitzball team!"; tr/a-zA-Z/ypltavkrezgmshubxncdijfqowYPLTAVKREZGMSHUBXNCDIJFQOW/; print;

    Using your original code, how about this modification?

    if (uc($ARGV[1]) eq 'E') { $_ = $ARGV[0]; tr/a-zA-Z/epstiwknuvgclrybxhmdofzqajEPSTIWKNUVGCLRYBXHMDOFZQAJ/; } else { $_ = $ARGV[0]; tr/a-zA-Z/ypltavkrezgmshubxncdijfqowYPLTAVKREZGMSHUBXNCDIJFQOW/; } print;

    This can translate to and from Al Bhed. The first argument is what you want translated, the second is how you want it translated (A for Al Bhed, E for English)

    This

    perl albhed.pl "Translate Me" A
    results in "Dnyhcmyda Sa".

    And

    perl albhed.pl "Dnyhcmyda Sa" E
    results in "Translate Me".

    Haven't played it yet, but it sure looks good!
    BTW, I noticed that they were careful only to replace vowels with other vowels, thereby preserving somewhat the pronounceability of the translated text.

    It looks more like a substitution cryptography to me than a language to me.

      Well, I doubt the people at squaresoft are linguistics... unlike someone we all know.

      ... Quidquid perl dictum sit, altum viditur.
      There are clues through out the game written in Al Bhed (which just are substitutions) If you can translate them you can found out where all the hidden goodies are now.

      I just started playing the game after Christmas and it's more light a rough CGI movie with playable parts. Very entertaining if you have the patience to sit through the story.

      patgas, very cool use for Perl!
