Some time back, I wrote an article for TPJ (which is now archived at SysAdmin Magazine), on MakeMaker. It covered mostly basic material, and was geared at the user wanting to write simple Makefile.PL files, and those wanting to understand the different options for setting up a module to install into non-standard places, etc.

After some discussion in a recent thread, I've been thinking about writing a follow-up. One that would cover newer features, and go into more depth as far as writing more involved, complex Makefile.PL files.

So I am inviting people to send me (preferably by e-mail using the link provided) their questions, or their favorite MakeMaker trick(s). I ask that (where possible) you e-mail me at rjray+maker@blackperl.com. Replying here will be OK if necessary, but I don't want to risk losing questions or suggestions that may fall below threshhold.

When I've written it (time and other current writing obligations permitting), I plan to either submit to The Perl Review, make available via web URL, or or post here, depending on the final length of the article. In any case, I'll have at least a link announced here.

Thanks, in advance.

    I think an ExtUtils/MakeMaker/cookbook.pod file would be welcome, too. {/me rummages for tidbits}

    This is a good idea. One place to look: the Template Toolkit does quite a bit with its Makefile.PL, including autogenerating configuration files to be run with another process that generates the TT documentation, both external and tacked-on POD. I wonder whether the Module::Build project would be worth mentioning here as well.

    That article seems to advice usage of h2xs. But is it really good idea? I found that it is much more easier for me to create all necessary files by hand.

    See Matts's weblog: Makefile.PL best practices. It lists all necesary steps required to create distribution skeleton without h2xs.
