just to be on the safe side (in case the suffix contains letters or is longer than 3 chars): 
my $suffix = $file =~ m/\.(.+)$/;

    Make sure the file doesn't have more than one dot..

    my ($suffix) = $file =~ m/([^\.]+)$/;
