Tech Support for Perl?

dru145 has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Monks,

I was asked by my manager if their is a company that offers tech support for Perl. They want someone that they can call or email and get an answer right away. So are there any companies out there that do this? Probably looking for a per incident basis paying instead of a yearly contract. I thought merlyn might, but it's not listed on his site.

Dru, as a datapoint for your manager, I managed a big (80,000KLOC, 10+ developers) Perl project for a year. During that time we had zero (0) questions that couldn't be answered by either referring to one of the standard books or by doing a web search. Tech support for us was a non-issue. And we were doing some moderately complicated stuff, involving sockets, web protocols, and DBI. If your manager insists on having someone there to throw money at, I'm sure merlyn would be more than happy, though I'm sure that funneling some cash into the Offering Plate would be appreciated. I think you (your manager) need to get into the ideal of open source environment a little more. The whole point of using Perl, or any other open source, is that it is free to all. Hopefully, it also creates an environment for people to share ideas, problems, and solutions with each other for free. You probably could pay someone for support, but you will always have a far greater support pool available for free.	[reply]
