Fellow Monks:
I'll protect the innocent -- but I gotta rant about my un-named webhost. Consider the following email transaction:
Abaxaba: Any chance for mod_perl or fast-cgi support in the future?
ISP: We do support mod_perl, but I am unsure as to what fast-cgi is.
To insure that you receive the correct answers, I would suggest contacting our technical support department, and give a brief description of fast-cgi.
Abaxaba: Any chance of having personal access to my domain's httpd.conf Apache configuration file? Other than .httaccess/.httpasswd, there is little configuration that I can do for my domain, esp. CGI $ENV's.
ISP: Under a shared hosting account, you will not have access to the httpd.conf file for Apache. To gain access, you will need to purchase a dedicated server.
My as-yet unanswered reply:
Abaxaba: Mod_perl requires modification to the httpd.conf file, including, but not limited to, the SetHandler and PerlHandler atributes. If I'm understanding your policies correctly, the only mod_perl support you offer is on a dedicated server, of which, there is no technical support??
Greater explanation to this issue is greatly appreciated.
So here's the deal. I've been with these cats for over three years, plus have referred other folks to them. I figure they've gotten about $1K from me, yet this is the kind of idiocy I have to deal with.
For $15.95/month, I get:
mySql 3.23.43 (4 databases allowed)
perl 5.6 (upgraded at my begging)
php4
jre -- despite their advertising a full jdk
400Mb storage
8Gb transfer/month
ssh/ftp/webcontrol
etc
I'm seriously considering taking my business elsewhere, and am seeking out some
recommended ISP's. I'm looking for httpd.conf modification (for mod_perl), and full jdk, plus the other niceties that I already get.
Your wisdom, as always, is appreciated.
