in reply to Server Errors

John M. Dlugosz, it's interesting that you raised this as a node on Monk Discuss. I personally wouldn't have done that.

However, this has brought about the opportunity for some discussion. In particular, how does one report PM server errors? I have looked through the Site How-to, and there is no entry for reporting site bugs or problems.

Depending on the degree of brokenness, I tend to do the following:

Correction:The email address for hosting problems is monkperl@pair.com

You don't need to report server errors. All server errors are logged. The wording that goes with server errors asking you to report them predates me and is on my to-do list to be changed.

Currently, the vast majority of server errors are caused by these things:

    1. System overload causes our SQL monitor to start killing things off.
    2. gods applying insufficiently tested changes.
Each of which can result in server errors almost anywhere but usually only over a short period of time.

In the past, I've always seen discussion on Perl Monks issues, including technical issues, here. That includes minor bugs and intermittent problems. Sometimes I'll see a discussion already going, so it's easy to know if it's already been dealt with or read more about it.
