semio has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

fellow monks,

I was recently given a problem that involves printing and perl. The requirement is to send a large group of files to a printer and, as the documents are printing, to produce a nicely formatted banner (seperator) page for each that states the name of the file just printed. The files could be any mix of .doc, .htm, .xls .txt, etc. Any input on this will be greatly appreciated.

cheers, -semio

Most unix and microsoft printer daemons support this sort of thing natively. Why re-invent the wheel?

I agree with ehdonhon, however if you need to do something unique here please toss us more info, what platform is acting as the print server, if unix what flavor? what spooler? samba? Many spoolers have backends that you can use to "hook in" and generate some output per job -- without more info though we can't give you anything meater than yes you may be able to do this.
