Call me old-fashioned, but I quite often reply to a thread just to say "thanks everyone for their help".

    Why are you thanking yourself?

    If you reply to a reply, you shouldn't get the notification.

    $ echo '$0 & $0 &' > foo; chmod a+x foo; foo;
      Aha, I see.

      I normally reply, in a general way, at the top level -- to thank more than one person -- I don't reply at individual level unless I'm thanking that specific person.
