I've looked at that test file, and I don't see any good reason for it to hang.

The only suggestions I can think of right now:

• Run the test directly (run ext/Encode/t/Unicode.t with the built perl 5.8.0 executable) to see where exactly it hangs
• Google to see if others have the problem too
