Could the Newest Nodes page please have one tiny letter-sigil per line to indicate the status of those nodes:

After I browse the front page for interesting topics, I want to look for stuff that hasn't hit the front page, so I can triage or reply. Newest Nodes seems to be the place for that, but it's not very informative about what has already been done to nodes-- I have to compare to another page or click through on each one to see if it needs triage attention.

(And as an aside, am I missing an obvious link somewhere to the "Nodes to Consider" page? I couldn't find any in the nodelets or usual banners.)

Am I alone in that triage strategy? Would this be useful?

Re: Add some triage sigils to Newest Nodes? (sure)

I like this idea. First (in priority), I'd like Newest Nodes to show number of replies (both direct replies and total number of notes in thread as "5/14"). Next, showing approval status and consideration also makes sense (provided they can be done in very little space). I'd have flags of:

    U
    Unapproved
    A
    Approved
    F
    Front-paged
    C
    Considered
so the total flag would match /^[UAF]C?$/. The C, if present, would probably be a link to Nodes to Consider just like the "Considered" is in the approval nodelet (when viewing a considered node).

I'd also like the front-page status of nodes shown on the section pages (such as SoPW and Meditations), probably with the ability to front-page nodes that have been approved. Note that you can already front-page/approve unapproved nodes from there if you like (select "show unapproved content" from user settings, I think).

So, for now, you might want to hit each section when you want to triage. That is what I do. If I want to triage the front page, then I open one window to the front page and one window to SoPW (for example) and compare. Not as nice as I'd like it, but it works.

I'd also like the consideration status of visible replies to show when viewing the root node (or a reply higher up in the thread).

And my biggest wish for Newest Nodes is to separate new replies to old threads from (and prior to) new replies to new threads and making the latter optional.

But, to be honest, I doubt any of these will make it to the top of my to-do list any time soon. I recently, for lack of time, gave up trying to return to writing a Perl book and the current system works, just not as pleasantly as I'd like. Perhaps some others will look into one of more of these ideas, though I expect most of them also have busy lives. I'd probably be more likely to fix up the rather badly broken approval nodelet (which requires near-gymnastics in order for it to be used "correctly").

In summary, I think you are mistaken when you say "Newest Nodes seems to be the place for that", at least for now. (:

    Thanks for the idea.

I'd second that, and also request that the replies be grouped either by title or by thread - if there are 20 new replies in a thread, I'd probably rather go to the top of the thread and read them as a collection, but if there are only a couple it's easier to view them individually. Being able to see immediately which applies would save me a chunk of time and effort.

In my opinion, nodes which are frontpaged are mostly for taking care of visitors or adding value to the usefulness of the monastery.

There are various views exist for newest nodes, which can show past nodes of few minutes to few days of selected types, which can help you to find really really new nodes. One of them is framechat framechat by epoptai.

There is also a view with number of replies to the node (by grinder) which easily can fulfill your task of giving the attention to the unanswered nodes..

Update1: Updated framechat link as per halley

I think you meant http://www.perlmonks.org/index.pl?node=framechat - you gave two links to grinder's sidebar thingy.

These are a great start, but why so far off the beaten path? Works in progress? Waiting for folks to know enough to ask for them?

The most convenient route I've found is to click the Help link in the Approval nodelet - there's a link to Nodes to Consider in the text there, a few paragraphs down.

Why not just add it to your Personal Nodelet?

I already did. I just figured that the popular system-offered queries would be linked somewhere more obvious than by search.

I recently added "nodes to consider" to my personal nodelet. That seems to work alright.
