artist has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Dear Monks
I am using Cable Modem on my Windows XP system, and like to see how much traffic goes by daily for which applicaitons. Which modules can help me for the same ?. I like to see the traffic generated by other applications which pops up every now and then.

Thanks

if you can manage to get it working on XP there's Net::Pcap which you could use to dump whatever info you want from the packets going in/out your machine (and other machines if your LAN isn't switched and you put your interface in promiscuous mode).

check out Ethereal for a GUI packet sniffer that works on WinFOO. they have links to WinPcap libraries but i don't know if they'll work with Net::Pcap.

Win32::NetPacket is an interface to winpcap -- cpan-testers have been reporting failures though.

MJD says "you can't just make shit up and expect the computer to know what you mean, retardo!"
      I run a Win32 PPM repository for perl 5.6.x and 5.8.x -- I take requests (README).

It's not a Perl solution, but MRTG or the combination of RRDtool and Cricket are great for monitoring how much traffic is going by a particular interface (you could probably query your cablemodem from your XP computer). If you want to get more specific and see what computers are generating what traffic and over what ports, you might take a look at ntop, but it can be difficult to get to work on Windows.

    hola artist.

depending upon which system you sit upon, i would heartily suggesting checking out tdimon from www.sysinternals.com if you are on win32.

. you can log, filter, and more using it. it is a source of continual surprise to me.

there are other traffic monitoring tools at the site too, that may suit you better. everything i have checked out there has been free, good stuff.

    regards,
