I've been through the example as well and the only buddy update I've been able to get good info for is the user the script logs in as. All others I've been unable to do anything with. There is a get_buddy_info function (I think that's what it's called I don't have the doc in front of me) that I thought would do it but it returns some url thing so I'm betting that's not what I'm looking for.

I'll give Net::AIM a try and see what I can make happen.
