wolis has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I recently discovered TreeMaps via this cute little disk space analyser http://www.werkema.com/software/spacemonger.html and I was so impressed with a TreeMaps ability, to represent alot of data in a small space and to allow quick human evaluation, that I wondered if anyone has been doing anything with TreeMaps in Perl?

chunlou's node on visualization using graphviz is possibly the closest to perl visualization of trees, and sadly it is not dynamic. however it can deal with very large graphs indeed, being based on att graph viz research. find it at Project Management: Graph & Diagram for Visualizing & Analyzing Structure with GraphViz.

of the other visualization tools on the web, the best free source capable of visualizing the discrete categorical data you seem interested in can be found at caida.

there are a whole set of tools out there for vizualization of trees if you are prepared to pay. my group uses inxight to vizualize large trees (> 3000 nodes). sadly the best interfaces to this are java, tho activex is possible, & perl could control this.

other links can be found at the root of infovisuares.

Thanks for the links to some interesting stuff

I have the GD module up and running on my system, so I could start creating static images etc.. I will now investigate GraphViz..

What impresses me about the Treemap concept compared to a Pie chart is proportionally sizing everything to fit within a defined space both X and Y. Could take it into Z coords I guess?

Why is there so little time?
