puran_bair has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Dear monks,

Could you please advise me on how to read a USB port in OS X ? OS X (Panther) doesn't seem to have Device::SerialPort. Instead it has Serial Driver. How do I access that by perl?

Or is there an easier way to read a continuous stream of data coming in from a sensor to my USB port?

Thank you for your help.

Puran Bair

I found a news at OS X HAX you could be interested. i'll give you a copy'n'paste:
This is extremely good news! It means that if you install the MacOS X driver, you'll wind up with a /dev/tty.usbserial-mumble device. There are perl scripts that can talk to this device to run the XMPCR from the command line. Huzzah!
Thank you, oha, for finding that news. It does seem hopeful. I would still need help with the "perl scripts that can talk to this device."
merely a lucky google search. i gave a look on linked pages about the driver, but seemd too difficult to me :)

good luck, and let me know... maybe i'll have to play with usb device on my iBook
