If it came with an INSTALL file, read the instructions there and follow them (paying particular attention where it tells you to do or not do things based on your operating system). Otherwise, there should have been some kind of instructions on the website you downloaded it from.

First off, let me suggest that you click on that link at the top of the PM page that says "Tutorials" and check out a page where you'll find all sorts of good stuff for the newbie to Perl to check out. In particular let me call your attention to How to RTFM and How (Not) To Ask A Question in general.

To answer your question about how to install Perl itself I would suggest you read the docos that came with the source distro you downloaded and if you are on a *nix platform that you get friendly with and the support of either your SysAdm or someone who has done this before on your particular platform whichever applies.

Welcome to the Perl Monks. We are always willing to help but we do expect folks to make some effort to help themselves before caling for help.

    Welcome to Perl!

Since you did not specify an OS I am assuming that you are on a windows machine. The best way to install Perl on a windows box IMHO is to use Activestate Perl. Go to http://www.activestate.com and download the free version. It installs via installshield or whatever. Then go to start, run, cmd, and cd to the Perl directory. There will be a bunch of docs in there to get you started. Fire up PPM to install any additional packages. If you are using anykind of *nix system it is probably already installed - type perl -v to check if it is there. cheers - Jeffery

    Hi and welcome to Perlmonks.

Other monks have already answered your question.

All I want to add is that we do hope that you will become a regular visitor to our community, but perhaps you can start over with a new username. After all, once you become a saint on Perlmonks NEWBIE2007 will sound kind of silly.
