I'd suggest a small tweak to that:

@files = grep {-f "$dir/$_" && /\.xml$/i} readdir DIR;

Because otherwise the regular expression would have matched a file named "fooxml.bar" as well. Also, this now matches the extension case-insensitively, just in case.
